Disciplines - Introduction

Death’s first creation, the Spirit borne Gethsemoni, was fashioned from raw Flesh, her mind coalesced from the collective subconscious of humanity, and as such, her form echoes the expectations of the living. Beautiful and flawless to behold, this resident of the shadow realm glimmers like a jewel in the darkness. But be warned – the Queen of the Dead’s countenance is naught but a distraction. Her mercurial mood and unfettered ambitions make her a dangerous and volatile player in Death’s Court, one whose loyalty to her king is often questioned… but only in the most terrified of whispers.

The Queen of the Dead serves a dual purpose within the Court – as regent, she rules in Death’s stead during her master’s long absences. Most denizens of the Underworld would be satiated with that degree of authority, but not so with Death’s first borne. As the reigning governor of the faction of Flesh, Gethsemoni holds a level of power and influence unrivaled by any other faction. For the Queen’s touch can be seen in most every creation of the Underworld. And of those creations that turn to the faction of Flesh, there can be no doubt of their loyalty – for it is absolute and unwavering.

Kier - Valkyrie of the Dead

Valkyrie of the Dead

It is true that Gethsemoni dislikes General Kier, in no small part due to Kier’s position as leader of the faction of Spirit. But the resentment that boils within Gethsemoni stems from a more primal source, for Kier stands at Death’s side as would a daughter – a child conceived during Death’s isolation, and raised from unlife solely by Death’s will. The creation of new life within the realm is a practice that Gethsemoni typically oversees. Consequently, Kier is one of the few denizens of the Underworld whose life-force does not connect back to the Queen of the Dead, and yet Death expects Gethsemoni to help shape and guide the fallen Valkyrie as if she were one of the Queen’s own.

Xiall - The Great Osteomancer

The Great Osteomancer

It is often said that one can best be judged by the quality of their enemies. If true, there is no higher compliment to the Queen of the Dead than that of her long standing rivalry with Chancellor Xiall of the faction of Bone. These adversaries stand diametrically opposed, each one representing everything the other despises. As such, the silent conflicts of court intrigue are waged between these two with a truly ferocious intensity. Over and over again, the Chancellor of Bone sees her calculated machinations turned to dust against the chaotic power of Gethsemoni… but it does not deter Xiall. No… for Bone is forever. It endures and it persists while all others fall. That is the quality of enemy Gethsemoni has found within this rival – an enemy that is forever.

“There is a saying in the Mortal Realm: ‘Measure twice; Cut once’ …such a charming peek into their puerile existence.”

Sideshow is proud to present the Gethsemoni: Shaper of Flesh Premium Format(TM) Figure, the latest addition to our original Court of the Dead collection… And the newest version of one of the Court’s most beloved characters!

The Queen of the Dead stands at a stately 21” from the bottom of her colorfully macabre base of Flesh Faction magic to the tip of her imposing crown. From the tiny golden Flesh Faction symbol that hangs delicately from a chain between her breasts to the smoky eyelids of her intoxicating sneer, no detail of this figure has been left unadorned.

The leader of the Flesh Faction and mother to all in the Underworld, Gethsemoni was brought to life in her nubile and commanding glory by Master Sculptor Mark Newman. “I feel she’s expressing a calm, cool confidence with a splash of ‘you have no idea what I’m about to unleash on you,’” says Mark, of Gethsemoni’s wicked little smirk. “My favorite element of the pose is the classic Contrapposto balance in her stance – kind of pushed to the extreme without looking forced,” he adds. “She has a slinky serpent-like grace spiraling through her body in a sort of ‘dance’ with her swirly conjured spirit goo sifting up through the Underworld.”

That “dance” with her necromancy conjuring was a major anchor point for the entire figure, driving not only sculpt but also the incredibly intricate cut-and-sew on this piece. “We wanted to create a synergy between the sculpted, flowing base, her powers, and her skirts,” says Tim Hanson, manager of Sideshow’s Fabric Design Team. “The fabrics needed to flow nicely, and have that special touch of refinement by adding the bustle piece and gold trim all around. The movement and fullness of the garment was very necessary when considering the composition of the piece.”
